In the literature of psychology of religion are already asked some basic questions about the definition of religion without having to get the kind of answers that will satisfy curiosity. A definition of religion at all possible?

Paul Tillich

We are now fleeing to the popular and vague proverb; ?? I do not know how to say it, but I know it when I see it ??. This is not scientifically satisfactory and we can not accept that ?? s statement. The famous theologian Paul Tillich believed that we had to clear up muddled thinking about religion. He noted;
There is hardly a word in the religious, theological and ordinary language, which is subject to misunderstandings, distortions, and questionable definitions than the word ?? ?? faith. The confused, misled, and creates in the other, skepticism and fanaticism, intellectual resistance and emotional abandonment, rejection of true religion and submission to others.
Other method
Despite his dissatisfaction with the terminology, Tillich could not find a replacement for defining the essential terms to believe ?? ??. He spent a whole volume to an explanation of it. We are faced with an identical task, but our method and approach are different, and we hope they help Tillich ?? s finding further elucidate.
J. Milton Yinger
Social scientists and religionists are tormented by any distractions, nuance, and finding in every word and definition of religion that has ever been offered. We therefore agree with the sociologist J. Milton Yinger that says any definition of religion is likely to be only satisfactory to the author ??. Yet in a later book Yinger had difficulty with a definition on an intellectual level. Here he spent a whopping 23 pages ?? s to.
George Coe
It's the same cause of frustration in the religion known psychologist, George Coe. He claimed;
I will deliberately refrain from giving a formal definition of religion ... partly because definitions do little information; secondly, because the history of the definitions of religion make it nearly certain that every new attempt at a definition, these introductory chapters inevitably complicated
No definition possible
We did not feel that the situation has changed since the ?? 90 when his claim Coe suggested. Although we can take the advice of another scholar, Dreser. He claimed that religion, like poetry and other living things, can not be defined. But some features are still given. Therefore, we should avoid the pitfalls of unproductive, sweeping, and largely theoretical definitions of religion. Here we are simply not ready. Many are available in the literature, but the most common, most vague and abstract way in which they have established normal, reducing their usefulness rather than to clarify the concept of religion.
The purpose of a definition
Our goal is to enable our readers to understand the different ways of definitions of religion. We do a lot with the Western religious tradition, but what we want to say is that religion performs many functions for many different people. Although these features on the outside in terms can be very large, with the core they represent the same essential human needs and functions, about what we want to say more.
In order to understand investigation with regard to these questions, we use a class of definitions which provides, at least, clear criteria; and useful definitions ?? or ?? which we will discuss in detail. This is not to say that there should be no discussion about what is an appropriate definition, on the contrary, but their selection must be based on a theory.
