The Book Fair and the Dickens Festival are big Deventer events annually make the national news. The city has more events of fair and queens to music and street theater. Most events are also free.
Deventer has a beautiful old town. Centrally located the Brink, Netherlands's largest square. Who is considering visiting Deventer might combine this with one of the many large or small events that are organized throughout the year in the city or on the square.

Previously, merchants from all over Europe came to one of the Deventer fairs there to trade. Deventer knew whopping six large or multi-day markets whose Good Friday market is the only one left. With as many as 350 stalls is the largest fair of the east of the country.

Over a length of six kilometers on nearly 900 stalls offer booksellers and antiquarians from home and abroad on their books. From comics to literature, esoteric or children's books, atlases, maps and posters. Everything can be found on the largest book market in Europe. At the end of the day there is a free concert in the Reduced Wellepad
The Saturday prior to the book takes around Theater Bouwkunde the poetry festival The Tuinfeest place.

The Dickens Festival has been for several years a great success. In the historical Bergkwartier come the weekend before Christmas, the major activity of players from the books of Charles Dickens to life. Ebenezer Scrooge, Oliver Twist, Mister Pickwick and Christmas carol singers walk among 900 other characters in the medieval streets. The smell of punch and roasted chestnuts complete the picture, making you feel like in Victorian England.
