Why is performed electroencephalogram?

Directed in a neurologist's office or hospital, this review is to record the electrical activity of the brain on a path. It allows to study and differentiate its main rhythms. In most cases, the examination is conducted in a sleep state. More rarely, it occurs after sleep deprivation or over a period of twenty-four hours. The EEG can detect epileptic disease and monitor treatment, but also to check for signs of encephalitis.

The GET also used to study sleep in certain conditions. However, it is superseded by CT and MRI to diagnose a brain tumor.

What to do before?

No preparation is necessary before an electroencephalogram. Tell the doctor wound infection or scalp, and possible medication. Do not forget to bring your old tracks if you have ever had this exam.

How's it going?

A conductive paste is applied to specific and symmetrical places of the scalp where the electrodes are placed, connected to a recorder. Recording starts eyes closed, then you are asked to open their eyes several times to study the good response of your brain.

If your physical condition allows, then it makes you breathe hard and fast for a short time, duration depending on your tolerance to this effort. Finally, you are subjected to a light test: it consists in watching the intermittent flashes of light from a strobe. By these stimuli, the objective is to show abnormalities, particularly epilepsy.

Is it painful?

No, this painless examination that gather the electrical activity of the brain, such as the electrocardiogram of the heart.

How long does an EEG?

Usually a quarter of an hour, twenty minutes but count with the preparation.

How does it feel afterwards?

Well, because the EEG is absolutely not aggressive examination.

When will we have results?

Information can be conveyed after examination by the doctor. The final report is usually available within hours or days after the examination because the interpretation of the plot is complex and difficult.

Are there any risks and cons-indications?

There are no cons-indication to the practice of an EEG. In contrast, stimulation, performed under medical supervision, can cause early seizure. Generally, they are not performed if the idle pattern is disturbed, and are interrupted in the other case, if the reactions are caused too great.
