Giro d'Italia 2015: Stage 3 Rapallo - Sestri Levante

On Monday, May 11th was the 3rd stage of the Giro d'Italia held. The 136 kilometer stage went from Rapallo to Sestri Levante. In a descent, the Italian classification rider Domenico Pozzovivo came hard fall and was taken away in an ambulance. The stage again ended in a mass sprint, which was won by championship leader.

Start and finish line

Rapallo was the start of the third stage of the Giro d'Italia. In the resort is home to approximately 30 500 people. The city has a large marina and a small beach, also says in Rapallo a castle.

Favorites stage win

The third stage was a heuvelrit, but the last 20 kilometers were flat. Attackers took the stage a great opportunity, thanks to the climbs. The favorites for the stage win were riders who are able to pass hills and have a reasonable sprint at home like Philippe Gilbert, Michael Matthews, Simon Gerrans and Fabio Felline.

Early flight
A large group of riders took a chance and went on the attack. The group consisted of 21 riders. Among them include Philippe Gilbert, Diego Ulissi, Simon Clarke and Mikel Nieve. The third stage was won by the Australian Michael Matthews. With the win, the team time trial and a higher classification than his teammate Simon Gerrans in the second stage, he drove the third stage and is now the fourth stage in pink.
Matthews now driving for the third year in a row for Orica Green Edge, for which he drove two years for the Dutch Rabobank.
Last year, Matthews also had success in the Giro. He rode six days in the leader's jersey and won the 3rd stage. Later that year he was allowed to wear the leader's jersey in the Vuelta a España.
