Every day hear 35 Dutch children they have allergic asthma: asthma due to allergy. They may fall behind in their development, in school or in their growth and they should use daily medicine.

Annually it is 13 000 new diagnoses. It reports the Long Fund. Director Michael Rutgers: "A vaccine to prevent young children from allergic asthma."

For most people incentives as dust or pollen harmless. But in people with allergic asthma, they put the immune system 'will start. That means stuffiness, coughing and wheezing. Asthma has a major impact on the life of a child.

Nienke from Almere has its asthma sometimes a lack of oxygen. "I have a headache and I get dizzy," says Nienke. She was also included in the hospital. Nienke got behind in her growth and she used daily medications. Dennis from Dedemsvaart had as a baby lung complaints. "I get the stuffy animals such as cats and dogs," said Dennis. He loves football and swimming, but must be aware of his asthma. Dennis also used daily medications. He was admitted to the hospital four times.

Vaccine against asthma

"We want to prevent lung disease, preferably at a young age," says Rutgers. "Thousands of children have been helped with a vaccine that keeps cherishing their immune system. It is our dream that there will be a vaccine. Dutch scientists are working hard on this, but we are not there yet. "

13,000 children annually with allergic asthma

In the Netherlands, allergic asthma affects every year 13,000 children between 0 and 8 years old. That makes Long Fund announced based on results from the PIAMA research into asthma and allergies in children. This requires more than 4,000 newborns in the Netherlands followed since 1996. "About half of all childhood asthma is allergic asthma," says Dr. Alet Wijga RIVM, a partner in the research is partly funded by the Long Fund.

Allergic asthma

Allergic asthma is the kind that is most common. In this variant people get anxious when they breathe stimuli to which they are allergic. Such as pollen, dust mites or animal dander. Also nutrients or components of medications may trigger an attack. It differs per person.
Other forms of asthma can be triggered by non-allergic stimuli, due to weather conditions or effort. Severe asthma with medication but difficult to control.
