It is easy to say that history is no more than a quantity of actions that occur between nations and states. But what is the interaction between the concepts of state, nation, nation-state? What is the role of nationalism and nationality at all? In this article, the following issues:
  • What are the definitions of states, nations and nation-states and how these are related to each other?
  • What is the role of nationalism?
  • What is citizenship?

What are the definitions of states, nations and nation-states and how these are related to each other?

States:
  • A state is first and foremost an organization. A state can exist only when there are certain rules and certain roles assigned to individuals to ensure that there is a unified whole with a purpose and the same interests. The organization has just one goal. That fact has been performing all political affairs. This is most noticeable in secular states, where religion and politics are separate. The goal is the people who inhabit the territory of the state under control.
  • Second, a state should be autonomous. This means that only the organization of the population under control themselves, and no one else.
  • Thirdly, there must only be a political power. Power is often central. Federal states are an exception to this third point.
  • Furthermore, the political power must be carried out by so-called organs.

Nations:
A nation is a group of people that distinguish the group from other groups. The individuals in the nation have the same ethnicity, culture and language. They almost always strive to have a state of their nation alone.
Nation State:
We are talking about nation states as a nation and a state geographically located in the same place. In other words, when one nation has its own state. There is political, ethnic and cultural togetherness. The state is then used by a nation to increase the feeling of solidarity. The state is also something that is fixed light because boundaries change generally do not. There are in the world no longer find so many nation states. An island like Iceland is the densest in the area, because the country has clear boundaries and no other population groups living in the territory. Netherlands is doubtful. It is often seen as a nation state, but the fact that Flemings might belong to the same nation and the Frisians are perhaps just another nation, the Netherlands is half a nation state.
Although the three concepts at first sight seem quite simple and clear, this is not the case. Much has been written about states, nations and nation states. A historian named Anderson claimed that a nation but a fabricated political group. Historian Gellner other hand claimed that nations and states did not always exist. Nationalisme would make sure that one can see the two as destined for each other.

What is the role of nationalism?

It is difficult to define nationalism. It is a political ideology that arose during the French Revolution. The flow causes a group of people who identify strongly with each other. These people see their national symbols than as sacred. Examples of national symbols are a flag and an anthem. Nationalism emphasizes collective. The nationalist group of people often seeking statehood. Prefers a nation state.
This immediately shows what is the role of nationalism. Nationalism reinforces the desire and perfect nation state. Nations grow stronger, but when there are situations today where these nations are not happy with their home, there may be a conflict.

What is citizenship?

Nationality refers to members of a particular nation, even if the nation does not have a state. Anyone who belongs to a nation therefore has a nationality. One component of nationality may be to have citizenship. Someone with citizenship has the right to participate in the political life of a state. Nationality and citizenship do not have to be the same. Russia is here of an example. The country is inhabited by various nationalities, all these people have the citizenship of Russia.
