Nausea and ginger

Nausea is one of the worst ailments out there, and everyone has ever experienced. There are several causes for nausea, and there are various remedies on the market that combat nausea. This means, however, are often quite expensive, while there are also simple, inexpensive remedies for nausea, such as ginger.


Nausea is a feeling of discomfort and inconvenience in the upper part of the stomach that can be accompanied by the involuntary urge to vomiting. Nausea is a non-specific symptoms, which means that it may have many different causes. Besides an uncomfortable feeling in the stomach can also be accompanied by nausea, sweating, excessive salivation and vomiting.

Causes of nausea

Nausea can have many different causes. The most common causes are:
  • Motion sickness: this is caused by a "misunderstanding" between the vestibular system and the visual system. The visual system provides the brains by which you move, while the balance system passes that you are not moving. This causes nausea.
  • Dizziness: nausea also in this case is caused by an incorrect perception of movement through the brains. This can have several causes, such as lack of blood flow to the brains.
  • Migraine: these neurological disease is characterized by recurrent headache attacks. The pain of these is often so intense that it is accompanied by nausea.
  • Infections of the digestive system: viral infections of the digestive tract are often accompanied by diarrhea, nausea and fever.
  • Food poisoning: the body responds to food poisoning through the digestive system to 'empty' as manifested by diarrhea and nausea leading to vomiting.
  • Pregnancy: During pregnancy, women often suffer from nausea. This may have a function, because it prevents pregnant women strongly making foods that could potentially harm the fetus.
  • Medications: Many medications have side effects of nausea. For example, many people who often undergo chemotherapy experience nausea.
  • Anxiety and depression: stressful situations can lead to a response of the nervous system, which can result in nausea.
  • Alcohol: Excessive alcohol use causes that affects the stomach upset, which is reflected in the form of nausea. This is often also accompanied with vomiting and often forms part of the so-called 'hangover'.

Ginger for nausea

Ginger is a spice that is derived from the root of the ginger plant. It is often used in food, and is a very healthy product. For example, ginger contains, inter alia:
  • Antioxidants
  • Vitamin B1, B2, B6 and C.
  • Among other things, the minerals iron, sodium, potassium, and zinc

However, ginger can also be used against ailments such as:
  • Flu
  • High blood pressure
  • Asthma
  • Cold
  • Different types of nausea

In the US Handbook drug ginger is included as an effective medicine against stomach disorders and multiple studies have shown that it is effective against several forms of nausea. If you're sick, it can be unpleasant to take strong making food. Therefore, it is not advisable to use undiluted ginger to treat nausea. What, however, is a good alternative, is to dissolve first at ginger and diluting. This does not necessarily using fresh ginger, but also with ginger powder. This can be as follows.
  • Mix fresh ginger with hot water
  • Push the block ginger a bit, so the moisture from the ginger root is in the warm water
  • Stir a few times together well
  • Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray and place in the freezer
  • Take a ginger cube from the freezer when you are sick and feeding it to counteract the discomfort
