Documented evidence is needed to arrive at a just decision but that is precisely what a large part of the medical act is missing. It is often relied on personal experience of the physician. But there are caveats to: Lack of experience, no control groups, incomplete and short follow-up, as well as a selective memory. You can make copies of your medical records always ask so you can possibly bring yourself this when you visit. Cause: You are entitled to inspect your medical records. Completely carry no information is otherwise not so wrong. You are then there assured that the second opinion really will be independent. However, it makes sense to discuss results of already conducted research, so some studies, eg. X-rays, need not be done again.

Right to full information

Asking for a second opinion is not always a confidence vote. You are entitled to full information about your disease, treatment options, risks, side effects and success rates. But all this information can often not be provided within ten minutes, sometimes the doctor is also clear that not in such sense. And you leave the doctor's office full of questions ... In addition to the information from your doctor you obtain information on eg. The Internet, a patient or your own GP. Find your doctor's crazy that you go get information elsewhere, then that proves once again that you are with the desire for a second opinion on the right track. No one is going to be fun along multiple hospitals or doctors. Second opinion request can be prevented to a large extent through full disclosure of the treating physician. This means open communication, so a good relationship between doctor and patient. Once those points are not met, the patient will need to seek his fortune elsewhere. The best doctors are in that sense the caregivers that the patient is at this stage to point out that he can always seek a second opinion. At the time, he says, has already won the trust. But the reality is sadly different.

Preparing for second opinion

Repeat good for yourself why you want the second opinion and what it hopes to accomplish. Write down your questions in advance, and make sure that they are all answered during the call. Because it is often all soon it may be useful to take a family member or close acquaintance with it. Two hearing more than one. Say it like you do not understand something and ask for clarification if necessary. Sometimes, something is only clear when the doctor explains his texts with a drawing. Make sure you have the conversation if it were to summarize, so put the most important points at the end of the conversation once more in a row. Ask your doctor whether you have understood so well and inquire about the possibility for a later telephone conversation with the doctor.

Third opinion?

Mostly, it's not until the third or fourth opinion. In some countries it is very common to do so, but not in the Netherlands. Yet it may be, provided the doctor cooperates and you refer. But that's also the point: Many doctors will not need to understand and do not cooperate. And so the reference phenomenon acts as a brake on this system, especially when it comes to getting the same request for help. In America, all is something else: It has been found that if the first and second expert gave a negative opinion regarding operation, a quarter of the patients are still allowed to operate by a third doctor. Play so there other factors that affect the decision making. Incidentally shopping along many doctors are not always in your favor. The greatest danger is that doubts will only increase and confidence in doctors generally lost.

When you have received assurance, the second opinion visit has been worthwhile. You are strong in your decisions and get confidence in your own doctor back. You now know that you are on the right track, there are no remaining questions.
But: It is possible that the second doctor comes up with a different conclusion, sometimes after multiple investigations. In America, the probability of a different conclusion as much as 25%, the Dutch figures are not known. If this happens to you, you must make a choice with whom you want to get treatment. Added to questions such as how much discomfort gives a treatment, what are the chances of success, how much experience to date, and what techniques are used. Then there is also the duration of the treatment, and the further course. Do you trust the doctor and his second method, you can continue using this doctor treating him or possibly wait.
