A standard USB stick work on one operating system. A very annoying feature for people who have both a Mac and a Windows computer. Fortunately, you can fairly easily and quickly self format the USB stick. Once you have done this, you can use the stick on both Mac and Windows. The same process can be applied to external hard drives.

USB stick

Although more information on the cloud is stored on servers and stored over the Internet, there are still people prefer to use a USB stick when they want to transfer information from one computer to another. The prices are due to technological advances also fell sharply. A USB stick buying 8 gigabytes can cost around 10 euros.   • Go to Tools
  • Go to Disk Utility
  • Choose the image left your USB stick
  • Go Clear
  • Highlight structure MS-DOS
  • Click Erase
  • Confirm

    The same steps can be applied to a hard drive. You can use your USB stick or hard drive to rename as you go through this process. You do this by filling in the name under 'Name'.

    Formatting a USB stick into a Windows computer

  • Make sure your USB stick is empty
  • Go to the Explorer Menu
  • Choose the image left your USB stick
  • Use the mouse and click Format
  • Choose under 'File' for exFAT
  • Click Start
  • Confirm

    The same steps can be applied to a hard drive. You can use your USB stick or hard drive to rename as you go through this process. You do this by filling in just under "Volume label.

    Ready to use on both systems

    Once you formatted USB stick to another language, you can be read by both systems. So now you can easily transfer files from a Mac to Windows and vice versa. Because some disadvantages is not immediately recommended to format external hard drives. These remain better in their own language, otherwise they lose some efficiency. So think twice before you run this process.

    USB key no longer works

    It may be that your USB stick it on both platforms no longer does. There will then be notified that the USB stick can not be read. Possibly this is due to the unsafe removal of your USB stick. To safely remove your USB stick on Windows, click "Safely Remove Hardware" appears on the screen. On a Mac, drag the icon to the trash so that the stick is safely removed. If your USB stick is no longer working this reason, could perhaps be solved by formatting it. If there are important documents located on your USB stick, you can try to save it with specialized software.
